Lucky Gamer Saves Retro Gaming Consoles from Being Thrown Away

A lucky gamer manages to save a pile of old video game consoles from being thrown away by their girlfriend’s aunt.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles ushered in the ninth generation of gaming when they launched in 2020. Numerous video game consoles have hit the market since the 1970s, and with gaming as lucrative as it is, it’s highly unlikely traditional console gaming is going anywhere any time soon. Someone that’s been gaming for the past few decades has likely amassed a sizable selection of consoles at this point, and those that don’t want to keep them in storage may wind up throwing them away.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

So was the case of Reddit user Duckindafed’s girlfriend’s aunt. According to Duckindafed, their girlfriend’s aunt was about to throw away multiple retro gaming consoles, but the Reddit user managed to save them from the trash heap. The images shared by Duckindafed show that the haul includes a whopping three Xbox 360 consoles, an Xbox One, a Kinect camera, an original Xbox console, a Nintendo 64, and various controllers.

Duckindafed tested all the retro consoles, and as it turns out, all of them are in working order except for the white Xbox 360. As one might have guessed from that kind of Xbox 360 model, it has been afflicted with the dreaded Red Ring of Death. The good news is that there are two other Xbox 360 consoles that do work, plus the Xbox One is backward compatible with a lot of Xbox 360 games anyway.

The haul mainly included retro gaming consoles, but there were a couple of video games available in the mix as well. According to Duckindafed in follow-up comments, the original Xbox console had a copy of Halo 2 inside. Halo 2 is generally considered one of the best games that was ever released for the original Xbox, if not the best game on the console, and so it’s definitely great to have in one’s collection. Granted, a newer version of Halo 2 is available to play on Xbox Series X through The Master Chief Collection, but it lacks the nostalgia value of playing it on the original hardware.

The other game that Reddit user Duckindafed saved from being thrown away was none other than The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, another game that is widely regarded as one of the best ever. However, the version of Skyrim that Duckindafed found was not a physical copy, but rather a digital download that was downloaded on one of the surviving Xbox 360 consoles.
